Scooters designed for long distances and heavy outdoor driving can smoothly merge with light pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Also known as handicap scooters, mobility scooters can drive at speeds up to 10 MPH and perform well even on challenging outdoor terrain. To steer the scooter, the user turns the tiller that is positioned at the front of the unit, similar to the handlebars of a bicycle. Thumb levers on the tiller control forward and reverse motion. Some choose a scooter with three wheels for its greater turning ability while others prefer the increased stability of a four-wheeled scooter; they are easily portable and some especially lightweight models fold for greater portability in traveling. Scooters feature a basic seat that is intended only for people who have adequate trunk stability to sit upright unaided. Most scooter users can stand and walk a bit around the house but drive their scooter to cover distances and go faster for errands, shopping and appointments around town. For many, scooters are a popular choice because they reduce the feeling of being handicapped or disabled.
